Brutus Attends Staff Training Session

This morning Brutus attended an all staff training session. He learned about 2 new genealogy databases--CLIO (a digital library of local histories) and The New England Historical and Genealogical Societies database--as well as a website developed by the University of Michigan hosting digital copies of Michigan local histories and atlases. He also had fun completing a scavenger hunt which will be made available to the public in February. However, he wasn't allowed to share the chocolate prizes since chocolate can make dogs sick. Staff members, as well as Brutus, are looking forward to using some of their new skills with those doing genealogical research.

Brutus Orders Books

Brutus also got involved with the staff of the Children's Department as they ordered some new books. He asked the children's librarian to order lots of stories about dogs, and none about cats, but she convinced him that the library needs to try to buy something for everyone. (However, she did find some dog books just for Brutus).

Brutus Enjoys Steve's Cake

Yesterday, our library director was presented a cake in honor of completing his first year on the job. Of course, Brutus had to get in on the action, too, but don't worry there was plenty of cake to go around to everyone. Brutus didn't want to be fired (or lose his status of library mascot).

Brutus Tells Stories

Brutus has adjusted well to life in the library. He recently invited some of his friends to a story hour. He shared some of his favorite books--Good Dog Carl and the Clifford series. As might be expected, he is particularly fond of stories about dogs.

He hopes to meet some of the children at the upcoming story hours in February. In Owosso you might see him on Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. Durand's next Bedtime story hour will be Friday, March 20 at 7 p.m.

Brutus' First Adventure

Brutus had a little mis-adventure his first week at SDL. He had heard about Dewey Readamore Books, the Iowa library cat whose adventures are currently a best-seller, and decided to investigate the book return. It was a very cold day in Michigan--below zero--and he found himself caught in the slot. Fortunately, he was quickly rescued and brought back inside.

Brutus Arrives at SDL

Brutus arrived at SDL on Friday, January 9, 2009. He jumped out of his box, and nearly scared Cindy to death. He also met Steve, Barb, and Margaret that afternoon, who thought he was adorable. He will be enjoying various library events and interacting with both the staff and the public. He is a very adventuresome dog; but don't worry; he doesn't bark or bite.
