Brutus and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day

Doggone it (with apologies to Alexander and Judith Viorst) Brutus has had more than his share of problems today. First, Margaret was busy with MeLCat requests for more than two hours and didn't have time to pay attention to him, so he decided to go outdoors and inspect the work on the library's roof. He was caught trying to climb up the scaffolding to see the tiles (and view) on the roof. Unfortunately, he was caught and told to stay in his box. (Or is it fortunately that he was caught before he fell?) However, his box is under one of the leaks so he decided to look for something to eat instead.

Brutus had heard that a registered dietitian will be speaking in Owosso at 7 p.m. on Tuesday night and he was hoping to taste test the refreshments. He was caught (again) before he could eat very many cookies, but he wants to know if he can have some more at the program. He was told that cookies were not considered to be healthy snacks for either people or dogs, and that there will be healthy snacks that night. He's not quite sure how he feels about healthy snacks, as right now cookies sound much more appetizing!

Brutus is now confined to his box for the rest of his terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad day. Staff are turning a deaf ear to his whining as they are too busy with library users, computers, and tax forms to keep him out of more trouble. At least the sun is shining and his box isn't in danger of getting wet! If he can be good for the rest of the weekend, maybe he will be allowed out again soon.

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

Brutus has been wagging his tail because he is excited about meeting an author from Owosso next week. Thomas Moorehead will be speaking about his new book at the Owosso Branch on Wednesday, February 1st at 7 p.m. Brutus has heard the song by Gordon Lightfoot, but he wants to read this new novel, too, to learn more about the people who were on the ill-fated ship and sailing on the Great Lakes. He plans to have a doggone good time, plus there will be refreshments (which are always appreciated by Brutus).

Brutus Learns to Download

Brutus has been busy trying to help some of the library users who received Nooks and Kindles for Christmas. He has almost perfected the downloading of ebooks, especially since detailed instructions were added to the library's web site (http://www.sdl.lib.mi.us/) and learned that the Kindle Touch only allows downloads through a computer (not through its wireless connection). Computer keyboards and mice are still a challenge though with paws! His next project will be to play with the Download Station in the library for MP3 players. He also plans on helping the librarians choose new titles for purchase and welcomes users' suggestions. He promises to pass along titles which aren't about dogs, but doubts if he can consider books about cats; talk directly to Nancy, Anne, or Margaret for that. He also wants to remind those who are interested in this service to call the library or stop in at your local branch to set up an account; you will need your card number (and if you come in, you can also pick up a copy of the instructions).

Kids Learn to Sew with Brutus

Last week, both branches had a sewing program for kids. In Owosso, the kids sewed felt pincushions and, in Durand, mittens. Brutus has a great time learning to sew a running stitch around his apple pincushion, but found it difficult without opposable thumbs. If you'd like to read more about this event, The Argus Press featured it in Monday's paper. Great job to all of our budding sewing enthusiasts. If you'd like to learn more about sewing, the library has lots of books full of project ideas.

Brutus Takes a Vacation

Brutus hitchhiked his way along the Blue Ridge Parkway and back to Michigan last week. He had a wonderful trip, and is seen here planning his route. Map reading was a new skill for Brutus to learn, but he quickly learned that the squiggly lines on the very large (and hard to handle) paper showed where the roads went. He has heard people in the library talking about GPS units, but he thinks that he'll stick to the old-fashioned map for the time being.

The food on the trip was delicious. Here he is ready to steal a couple of hot dogs off the grill. Now that he knows not only how good they smell, but also that they aren't made from dogs, he'll eat as many as he can get!

Brutus Enjoys the Great Fall Weather

Brutus escaped from the library on Monday afternoon to enjoy mid-Michigan's great fall weather. He sniffed out the bike trail along the Shiawassee River between Owosso and Corunna. These are a few of the sights he enjoyed. Lots of other dogs had been on the trail, but he didn't see any of them. He did see a few ducks in the river, but they flew away before he could really meet them.

He enjoyed himself so much that he is now pestering to be taken on a trip to see more of the beautiful fall leaves. Several staff members have been talking about trips to the Blue Ridge Mountains. Maybe if he whines enough and promises to be on his best behavior someone will take him on a trip. By the way, he wants to know what a mountain is why hasn't he ever seen one around here?

Brutus Loves to Read

Brutus just finished the newest book in the Chet & Bernie Mystery Series--The Dog Who Knew Too Much. Spencer Quinn is one of Brutus' favorite authors; no one else is able to tell a story from a dog's point of view as well.

This book finds Chet and Bernie looking for a missing boy. Devon disappeared during the night while on a hike. Bernie suspects he was bullied by the other boys; his camp counselor insists that he just wandered off; but Chet's nose can't find evidence of either scenerio. The truth ends up being much more sinister, involving meth labs and murder. Bernie is also arrested for the counselor's murder leaving his girlfriend Suzie and Chet to decipher much of the puzzle. Will they find Devon before it is too late? A tail-wagging good read in Brutus' estimation. He gives it four wags out of a possible five.

Back to School

With the kids now back in school, it is also time for Brutus to return to (obedience) school. He is excited about returning, even to the point of bringing his leash up to the desk and wagging his tail. He has also picked out some books for his class--How to Train Your Hard to Train Dog and Marley and Me (as an example of how not to train a dog).

Now that he is past the chewing stage, staff is relieved to have him interested in learning. They want to him to learn some new tricks. However, Brutus wants to take a law class and see if he can be exempted from the city leash laws.

Brutus Prepares for the Reading Party

Brutus is trying to decide which book he should report on at the September 7th reading party. The staff has been trying to encourage him to broaden his interests beyond dog stories, but there's more than 400 fiction books about dogs in the library catalog! (And he knows that dogs are smarter than cats--their superior instincts have solved many mysteries from the Hound of the Baskervilles to Rita Mae Brown's A Nose for Justice. Sneaky Pie, Koko, and Yum Yum have nothing on his favorite dog sleuths).

He was wagging his tail over this pile of dog stories. Plenty to choose from and only two more weeks to to decide and read his book! He is supposed to choose the best book he read this summer or his favorite, but how can a little dog make such a big decision? He wonders if anyone will notice if he watches the movie Where the Red Fern Grows instead of reading the book. (He's heard of kids doing this with their school assignments). It's much easier to operate a DVD player with his nose than turn pages in a book.

Improvements to Owosso 's Adult Department

Brutus is enjoying some of the new items in Owosso's Adult Department. He likes the new computers and has been using them to look up information of canine health. Today he found vetinfo.com which has a lot of materials about keeping your dog healthy. There was even a section on asking a vet a question! Best of all, he found a recipe for dog treats; now he just has to convince someone to make them for him.

Brutus has also been using the reading lights and outlets on some of the tables. Today he was skimming What Your Dog is Trying to Tell You for hints on communicating his desire for treats to the staff. He has also seen a number of people with laptop computers using the new electrical outlets.

Novel Destinations

Brutus is enjoying this year's teen and adult summer reading program. He has been traveling all over the world by reading about other countries (and the dogs who live there). Never having gone past obedience school, he also needs an atlas to show him where these countries are. Right now he is looking for a book about a European dog, and planning to stowaway on Margaret's upcoming trip to China. If he can't go again this year, he may just have to clean off her desk while she's gone! (Margaret's note: If Brutus knows what is good for him, he will leave my desk alone. Chewed up folders, papers, etc. is not the same as cleaning. If he wants my desk cleaner, he needs to help with the work instead of creating a bigger mess).

Brutus Learns about Downloadable Books

Brutus was thrilled to hear about the library's new subscription to Overdrive which provides downloadable audio and e-books. It is so difficult to turn pages and change CDs without a thumb! (Now if he could just master the computer keyboard). There is still time to sign up for the 7 p.m. Wednesday evening program on how this works. It is available to anyone with a valid resident or fee-based non-resident card, but you do need to contact the library to set up a PIN and learn how to access your account.

Get Caught Reading Month

Brutus just learned that May is Get Caught Reading Month when staff caught him reading in the library this afternoon. He invites you to send him your photos of being caught reading, and he'll ask the staff to post them on the Library's Facebook page. Tiptoeing Through the Tulips

Brutus was caught tiptoeing through the tulips in the library's flower bed this afternoon. He was enjoying the sunshine and flowers after a very wet week which included some minor flooding in the library. Harriet reminded him of the NO DIGGING rule. There would be dire consequences if so much as one tulip bulb or plant was disturbed! The only exception was dandelions; they could be dug up. There are just too many rules for a small dog to remember!

2011 Edible Book Contest

The entries are beginning to arrive, and, as usual, Brutus wants a share of the spotlight. The camel club doesn't allow elephants to attend their meetings so Brutus stopped by to see if dogs are allowed. Unfortunately, he could not tolerate the desert conditions and lack of water the camels have to endure so we'll never know if he could have joined the club or not.

The Dr. Suess entry, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish looked interesting, but Brutus wasn't so sure about the water. It didn't smell like something he would drink--too fishy.

The children's entries are some of his favorites. The fruit on the Rachel's Rainbow entry looks good enough to eat! (One of Brutus' favorite activities). And rumor has it that there will be watermelon cake and clove cookies at tonight's program, too.

Be sure to come by the library between 4 & 7 p.m. to vote for your favorites. Awards will be announced after the Massie's presentation "Woodsmoke & Elbow Grease" which should be interesting for the entire family. Brutus hopes to see you there.

Book Spine Poetry

To celebrate April is National Poetry Month, Brutus has been working on a book spine poem. Book spine poetry is created by stacking books so the titles on the spines make a poem when read from top to bottom. It's obvious from his poem that Brutus doesn't like cats very much. Anyone is welcome stop by either the Owosso Children's Department or the Durand branch to create their own book spine poem. The poetry will be displayed through April.

Edible Book Contest

Brutus invites everyone to join him for a great time with the Edible Book Contest. He has chosen White Fang for his book (because it is about a dog) and created a large tooth from a marshmallow. If he can do this with paws and teeth, even a child can create something for the contest. Brutus probably won't win either; he has all ready eaten half a bag of marshmallows so his "white fang" certainly won't last until the judging on the 14th. Complete rules and application blanks are now available at the library or online. Brutus is particularly anxious to try some of the old recipes from the Massie's book Walnut Pickles & Watermelon Cake at the Awards Program.

Brutus & the Ice

While most of the staff is complaining about the return of winter and the cold, Brutus is toasty warm in his thick fur coat. This morning he went outdoors to see the icicles in the back of the library. He wanted to taste them, but Margaret wouldn't let him. Oh, well, he'll just have to sneak outside when she isn't looking!

National Puppy Day

According to Chase's Calendar this is a day to celebrate the puppies in your life or adopt a puppy which needs a home. Brutus will be celebrating his status as library mascot and hopes that you (and your dogs) will also take advantage of this day. Brutus Learns about Money

One, two, three, seven, ten. . . Brutus needs help learning how to count, but he knows where to find information on investments--the library! There will be a series of financial programs in Owosso during the months of February and March.

On Thursday night (February 10) at 7 p.m., Cynthia Edwards from the Social Security Administration will present "Social Security: What You Need to Know". As well as providing information on this popular retirement program and Medicare, there will also be time to ask questions.

Then on Monday, February 14th at 6:30 p.m. the first in a series of six investment programs provided by the Michigan Office of Financial and Insurance Regulation will be held in Owosso. "Ten Steps to Protect Your Money" will show attendees how to avoid common investment mistakes, present a 7-step process for making better investment decisions, and include 3 steps to avoid scams and investment fraud. In Brutus' opinion, the best part is that no one will be trying to sell him anything! He has a new fascination with money, but staff still won't let him help collect fines or make change--he needs to learn to count better first.

Brutus has a Snow Day

Brutus enjoyed playing in the snow. He didn't know that snow days could be so much fun! He missed everyone yesterday and is enjoying being back to work again today. (Although he is not the one answering the phone about tax forms and hours). From the tales being told, he had more fun than most of the staff who spent nearly all day cleaning out driveways, shoveling sidewalks, and waiting for snowplows so that they could shovel some more. Much to Steve's and Margaret's dismay, he would even like another blizzard this winter. They are threatening to send him to upstate New York or New England if he likes snow so much. He was also nice and warm with his soft, fur coat.

Brutus Learns about Quilting

Brutus enjoyed last night's quilt program. The pictures and ideas presented on the quilts were very interesting. Has anyone made a quilt featuring dogs (and no cats)? If he can learn to sew with paws instead of fingers, he may try to make one himself. All the rules he had to obey were very limiting though for a little dog--no dog hair on the quilts, no chewing on the quilts, no taking a nap on a quilt, and no eating of the cookies-- although it looks like he may have helped himself to one or two or those.

The next program in Owosso will be on Thursday, February 10th at 7 p.m. Brutus hopes to see you there to learn about Social Security even though the staff keep telling him that dogs don't get Social Security; they must rely upon their owners for their food and housing. Maybe he should push for equal rights for dogs (but then he might also have to work). On second thought, a dog's life isn't too bad.

Brutus Prepares for the Reading Party

Brutus has sniffed out a book for the Reading Party on Tuesday, January 18th at 7 p.m. in Owosso. He has chosen a new one about one of his favorite dogs, Chet. Chet can always solve the mystery before the humans usually even pick up the scent; and while he is fond of his owner Bernie, Chet is much smarter. (Aren't most dogs?) Quinn tells the story from Chet's perspective which is another reason why he is one of Brutus's favorite authors; no other author understands a dog's thoughts as well.

Another plus, Brutus has heard rumors that there will be cookies (maybe homemade?) at the party, too. He hopes to see lots of you there.

Gingerbread Lane

Brutus' nose was out of joint today. He wasn't invited to participate in Gingerbread Lane. The kids had a lot of fun making gingerbread houses out of graham crackers, frosting, and candies; but the staff were afraid that Brutus would be more interested in eating than creating so he had to stay in his box.

However, he is looking forward to the puppet show Triceralocks & the Saber-Tooth Bear on December 27-29th. He'll have to ask Anne if there is a part for a dog!

Christmas Potluck

Brutus was thrilled to join the Owosso staff for their lunchtime Christmas potluck. There was lots of good food! (There was even some food dogs could eat; but there was lots of chocolate for the humans, too). Brutus particularly enjoyed the taco meat. The humans also revealed their Secret Santas. Everyone had a great time. Now, can he convince Anne and the kids to share their gingerbread houses with him next week?

Lego Block Party & Happy Thanksgiving

Brutus is having fun this morning playing in the Lego and Duplo blocks. He is hoping that some kids will build him a dog house. He finds the blocks hard to handle with his paws and mouth. Would someone with fingers please help him! If you can't make today's Lego Block Party, be sure to join us on December 20th for the next one.

Brutus has also been sniffing around the cookbooks today and hinting that someone on the staff should invite him to Thanksgiving dinner. Turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing and pies sound a lot better than dog food. He's heard that Margaret can make a really good apple pie! Along with the entire staff, Brutus wishes all his friends and library users a Happy Thanksgiving.

"Old Friends Are Best"

"Old friends are best" according to Francis Bacon, and Brutus agrees. He enjoyed seeing the antiques which were brought into the library on Saturday. He never knew that so many people had so many interesting items.

About 150 items were appraised by Mike Gaylord of "Everything Classic" radio show. Some people waited until after 7 p.m. for their turn. Brutus loved the Abraham Lincoln log cabin quilt from the 1890's and the old soda fountain. (Too bad it wasn't working; he'd like to try some Vernors). The most fun though was playing on the spinning wheel. Unfortunately, that got him crated for the rest of the night--he didn't know that it wasn't a toy! (It dated back to the 1870's in Pennsylvania).

The only things Brutus didn't care for featured cats. Doesn't anyone collect dogs? However, Margaret was impressed with the cat ink well and bronze statue which were both quite valuable.

Busy as a Dog?

Brutus has been a very busy dog the last few days. He thinks that the phrase "Busy as a bee" could be changed to "Busy as a dog."

First there was story hour on Tuesday where they played a fun game with something that looked like a parachute, whatever that is. It looked like a good thing to jump onto or pull on for a tug of war. He is looking forward to meeting more kids as story hour continues through November 16th.

Then last night he played hide and seek in the Kitchen Assistant's basket. He was looking for something to eat, but it only had the names which were being drawn for prizes. The program was interesting, but it sure made him hungry!

Then this afternoon there was a puppet show about a prince who had been turned into a pumpkin. Brutus got into the act, too. He thought that maybe kissing the pumpkin would turn it back into a prince, but found out that it took a princess sleeping on a mattress on top of the pumpkin to break the spell. Now could the witch make a pumpkin pie for him?

Programs, Programs, & More Programs

Brutus is finding his choices overwhelming. There are so many things to do at the library, that he doesn't know what to do first. Story hours have resumed and he loves spending time with the kids. There is nothing like having a child love you!

Then he heard that the Kitchen Assistant is coming on October 26th. Margaret told him there wouldn't be any cooking and that the refreshments were for the people. He was very disappointed; however, if Darla Jaros is giving cooking and money saving tips, maybe someone would listen and take pity on him. It would be really nice if the staff would learn something and bring in more treats! (Hint, hint)

Finally, he learned that Mike Gaylord will be doing antique appraisals on October 30th. He was worried that he might be an antique like the lamp in the staff lounge. (It is one of the original lamps in the library). Staff has given him both good news and bad news--he is too young to be an antique (the good news) and he probably does not have much monetary value since he was not made by Steiff (the bad news). At first his feelings were hurt, but they reassured him that he was priceless in their eyes and is in no danger of being sold to the highest bidder.

Travelin' Man & Travelin' Dog

Brutus got into the act last night when Tom Weschler, photographer for Bob Seger's band in the 60's and 70's, visited the library. He enjoyed Weschler's talk about the band and stories about Seger. Brutus is too young to remember his hit songs, but he still found the idea of touring and singing fascinating. Too bad dogs can't sing; he thinks the traveling and meeting people would be lots of fun. Maybe he could moonlight as a roadie mascot as well as keep his job at the library.

Brutus also helped out with the book signing, making sure that the pens weren't lost. He supposes that if he ever writes his own book, it would need to be autographed with a paw print since manipulating a pen is very difficult.

Next week, Brutus hopes to learn about Owosso's Downtown Historic District when Lorraine Weckwert speaks on Thursday, October 7th at 7 p.m. and meet some of you there.

Brutus Enjoys the Library Carnival

As you can see, Brutus got very involved with the Library carnival this year. He helped blow up balloons in the morning, and then played a few games in the afternoon. He liked the one where he sniffed out the princess the best; he was better than most of the kids at it. (A few humans considered this to be cheating, but Brutus felt that he should be able to use dog abilities to their fullest). Loose Tooth wasn't quite as much fun--bean bags kept being thrown at him.

His favorite part of the afternoon though was the food. He kept the staff busy keeping him out of the cakes for the cake walk, the sno-cones, and the hot dogs and chips. One small dog can sure get into alot of mischief! Mr. Flayer finally had to take him into his custody so that other staff members could work. This had the benefit, though, of meeting a former childrens' librarian, Trixie Steck. He learned that she had been in charge of the very first library carnival.

His least favorite part of the day was the rain! The fun had to wrap up early when the scattered showers became a steady rain. It doesn't look like Brutus will ever be much of a retriever; he didn't like getting wet. As a whole, it was a doggone good day and Brutus is looking forward to next year's carnival (and he promises to pray for sunshine).

Brutus Welcomes Margaret Back

Brutus welcomed Margaret back from her vacation, but he didn't think that she enjoyed having her face licked as
much as he enjoyed licking it. He was also relieved to learn that she hadn't eaten any dog meat, although she did like the donkey.

These are Brutus' favorite pictures. The first one shows her with one of the co-teachers in the English class. They worked on conversational English skills with Chinese teachers. This was interesting work and the teachers were very friendly.

In the second picture, she is standing in front of a public library in Beijing. This library provides services to migrant children; these are the children of rural families which have moved into Beijing to look for work. Often there is no one at home when they are out of school if their parents can even afford to send them to school. Also, while the library is public in the sense that it is open to the public, it is not supported by tax dollars; the man who runs the library also has to raise the funds. Owosso's library is much bigger than this one and provides a lot more books and materials than this one; there were no computers in this library because they were too expensive. (By the way, the city of Beijing is bigger than the state of Conneticut and has more people than the entire state of Michigan).

The third picture was taken on the last day of the trip while doing a little sightseeing at the Great Wall.

Brutus now wants to to go to China, too. He asked the staff to promise to smuggle him unto the plane so he doesn't have to travel as cargo. Can dogs apply for a passport? He also wants to make sure he can come back to the U.S.; he hears that there aren't many pets in China and he likes his cozy home at the library.

Brutus & Science Alive

Science Alive!

Brutus had a wonderful time at this morning's Science Alive program! He made lots of new friends with the animals who visited the Owosso branch, including a chinchilla, armadillo, alligator, Burmese python, and a duck! He loved watching the armadillo curl up into a ball to defend itself against any animal predators.

Mr. Neil demonstrates how to get a hug from a Burmese python. Many brave children and even a few brave grown-ups got a hug from the "baby" python!

The Children's Library's dragon carpet remains ever vigilant about ducks in the library. Quack!

Henrietta stole a few hearts when she hopped through the library!

And she even climbed the steps to check out the picture books!

Brutus, Writers, and Illustrators...Oh, My!

Brutus has been a very busy dog! In the past few weeks he has had the opportunity to meet lots of writers and illustrators who stopped by the Owosso library, including Buck Wilder, Arnie Bernstein, and Tom Woodruff.

Buck Wilder is a Michigan wilderness guru and talked to kids and families about the importance of camping, boating, and other outdoor activities.

Arnie Bernstein is the author of Bath Massacre: Ameria's First S chool Bombing, published by the University of Michigan Press:
On May 18, 1927, an explosion rocked the small town of Bath, in Clinton County, when dynamite planted by Andrew Kehoe detonated in the basement of the local school. In this dramatic history of the horrific tragedy that claimed more than 40 lives (most of them schoolchildren), including Kehoe and his wife, the author skillfully explores the origins and events leading up to the tragedy, the terrible destruction at the school and Kehoe's farm, and how the stunned community struggled to cope in the immediate aftermath
His book was named one of the 2010 Michigan Notable Books by the Library of Michigan.

Brutus was first in line this morning to have his bingo sheet stamped. He has finished his first book for this year's adult summer reading program, a mystery. Of course, Brutus only likes books about dogs so he chose Dog on It by Spencer Quinn, a story which features a dog who is smarter than his master. (Aren't most dogs?) He's thinking of working across the row--didn't Curwood write a story or two about dogs? Do recipes for hot dogs count? Brutus invites all high school students and adults to join him in some reading fun.

Brutus & the Bath Schoolhouse Massacre

Brutus has been listening to Steve, Chicaro, and Margaret talking about the Bath schoolhouse massacre in 1927. He cannot understand how anyone could intentionally kill people, especially children. He loves kids and children are some of his best friends; they are usually quick to give him hugs, treats, and a good scratching behind the ears. Fortunately, Brutus does not bite people, although he has reconsidered this postition and asked if he will be allowed to bite people who don't like children; (but Margaret says there will be no biting period if he wants to remain as the library mascot).

Brutus is anxious to meet Arnie Bernstein on Friday evening, May 14th. He will be speaking at the library about his book at 7 p.m. as part of the Michigan Notable Authors' Tour. Brutus remembers lots of fun at last year's event and expects to enjoy this author just as much. Books will be available for sale after the program for $15, and refreshments will be served. (Brutus supposes he will be banned from the cookies as usual; he is hoping that someone will take pity on him and bring some dog bones).

Brutus Wants to Go Canoeing

Brutus recently found himself up the creek (or Shiawassee River) without either the proverbal canoe or paddle. He is hoping to win the free canoe or kayak trip which will given away at Doc Fletcher's program next week. You can give Brutus some competition by attending the free program at the Owosso Branch on Wednesday, April 28th at 7 p.m., but you must be present to win. Fletcher will present an hour-long photographic journey down selected rivers featured in his books. Refreshments will be served and books will be available for purchase. Brutus doesn't need to be the only lucky dog!

Edible Books Contest

Brutus enjoyed looking over the imaginative Edible Book creations at the Durand Memorial Branch last night. He wanted to chase the rabbits, but staff had to explain they were cakes, not real. He even got his own piece of bunny cake. Brutus was disappointed there weren't any Edible Books based on dog books, but he's hoping there will be some next year. In 2011 the contest will be held at both Owosso and Durand locations.

Brutus Takes In a Show!

Brutus was thrilled to attend the Owosso Library Puppeteer's performance of "The Tortoise and The Hare" last Tuesday. More than 40 people joined him at that show to watch the epic race of a speedy hare and a slow, yet steady tortoise. Brutus enjoyed the show, particularly the pizza delivery walrus who also raps.

Many of the people in attendance commented on the library's "new" puppet theater. In fact, it is the same theater with a a few new paint, trim, and lights. We think it looks like a million bucks though and are so grateful to the volunteer who helped give our puppet theater a new look!

Spring Break Craft Program in Durand

Brutus had fun today at the craft program at the Durand branch when he helped the kids make wind socks. He's looking forward to the next craft time on Earth Day, April 22. Kids can drop in anytime between 2 and 5 to make bird feeders. Brutus doesn't get to chase birds, but he does love to bark at them.

Brutus is so excited for his Spring Break. The weather is gorgeous, so he decided to borrow a pair of Miss Anne's super-stylish shades and read some books. He also thought he'd check out some audiobooks because they are great for listening to if he decided to take a road trip on his vacation.

Unfortunately, Brutus was not allowed to drive the police car or the fire truck due to some silly "rules" the Department of Public Safety has. Something about a "driver's license" was mentioned, but Brutus's dog license apparently does not count. He was able to get his picture taken with both vehicles though!

Brutus Has a Diary of a Wimpy Kid Party!

Brutus was so excited today to have a huge group of kids show-up to his Diary of a Wimpy Kid party. Brutus loves to read about Greg Heffley's adventures navigating middle school and can't wait to see the movie!

Brutus was very nervous about playing some of the games. He did NOT want to get the dreaded "Cheese Touch." Here is a picture of Brutus carefully avoiding THE CHEESE which was discovered in the library's parking lot this morning.

Aaron Zenz's visit

Brutus was invited to spend a night at Margaret's house this weekend. He enjoyed meeting Mac (the black Scotty), Beth (the white Scotty) and Jack (the Russell Terrier). They had fun playing on the living room floor while Margaret was out shopping. Brutus is hoping to meet lots of other dogs when the kids can bring their favorite animals in for a sleepover at the library on Friday, March 19th.

Brutus did have one scary experience this weekend though. He found out that even though he believes that dogs rule, Tipper (the cat) is the Queen of the House (at least when Margaret isn't home). She had first dibs on anywhere the sun was shining, Margaret's lap, and anywhere else she wanted to be. Also, her food was totally off limits to him. He learned that cats can bite and scratch, but he is smarter than Tipper because he would never bite the hand that feeds him.

Book Discussion

Brutus has been busy reading The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society for next week's discussion (Tuesday, March 2 at 7 p.m. at the Owosso Branch). He hopes that lots of people are enjoying the book as much as he is. He thought that the part about the Nazis not allowing the people to keep their pets was very sad. He wants to know how anyone could be so mean that they wouldn't want a cute dog? (Cats are another story, although he did feel sorry for Muffin and the little girl who owned her). He also thinks that he'd rather eat dog food than Potato Peel Pie!

Shoveling snow

Brutus was excited to see all the snow so he could wear his new scarf the kids made for him at the last craft program at the Durand branch. The next craft time at Durand is scheduled for this Friday, Feb. 12. Kids can stop in and make a craft anytime between 2 and 5 p.m. Brutus is looking forward to making a valentine craft for his sweetheart, but he won't tell the staff who his sweetheart is. We'll have to wait and see!

Happy Groundhog's Day!

Brutus has never actually seen one of these creatures, but he did ask the staff for a picture. Now he wants to know why groundhogs have a holiday, but dogs don't. (Did you know that according to Wikipedia in some ancient European weather lore the prognosticator is a badger or a bear?) He feels that dogs(and especially himself) are better looking and more personable. Brutus doesn't believe that groundhogs can predict the weather either: Michigan always has at least 6 more weeks of winter. Brutus is hoping for an early spring so that he can visit outside the library ocassionally (and he vows to chase any emerging groundhogs out of the library).

Craft Programs for Kids

Brutus had a fun time at the craft program last week at the Durand Memorial Branch when he helped the kids decorate fleece scarves. Some of the kids decorated their scarves with snowflake and mitten patterns, and because the scarves were blue and white, some decorated them with D's for Durand. The kids had to explain to Brutus that the D's didn't stand for dogs. Mostly Brutus was happy being wrapped up in a warm, fleece scarf.

The next craft program in Durand will be held during Presidents' Day weekend, on Friday, Feb. 12 from 2-5 p.m. Brutus is hoping Brenda comes up with a craft to make dog beds but she is thinking of a Valentine's Day craft.

Where's the Chocolate?

Brutus saw the flyers in the library about the "For the Love of Chocolate" program to be held on February 1st. He then decided to sniff around the library in search of candy. He wasn't successful, but he did find a cake in celebration of Steve's second anniversary with the library. It was white, but almost as good, in Brutus' eyes (and nose), as chocolate. The library staff keep telling him that chocolate isn't good for dogs, but Brutus finds this hard to believe. He thinks that it is just a ploy to keep all the chocolate for humans instead of sharing it with dogs. If he wants the real facts on chocolate he'll have to join the program on February 1st at 7 p.m. when Barb and Vic Spagnuolo from Owosso's Spagnuolo's Chocolate Company share their wisdom.

Brutus Goes to a Puppet Show

Brutus made a new friend this week--the Little Red Hen. He was even a good dog and didn't chase or try to eat her! Little Red Hen was the star of a puppet show held in the Children's Department which was enjoyed by both Brutus and a number of kids. There were even other animals present (which made Brutus even happier). Brutus is now looking forward to story hours beginning again on January 5. This is always a good way to meet, and get lots of hugs, from the kids.

First Scholarship Recipient

Brutus was thrilled to congratulate Chicaro Napier-Hoffman on being the first recipient of an award from the Ken and Suzanne Uptigrove Scholarship Fund. Chicaro was selected because she is both a current SDL employee and enrolled in Wayne State University's library science program. This was a nice early Christmas present for Chicaro who hopes to be an archivist some day. She presently works in the Adult Department of the Owosso Branch as a part-time professional. In addition to helping people who use the library, she also assists with interlibrary loan (MeLCat) and works on special projects to benefit both the library and community.

Brutus was interested in becoming a librarian until he learned how much work is involved. With only an obedience school education, he would first have to finish high school, earn a bachelor's degree, and then complete a master's degree in library or information science. This was just too much for a little dog to comprehend. He thinks he'll leave this for the humans. In the meantime, he'll just do a little more tail-wagging in celebration of Chicaro's accomplishments.

Brutus Wears a New Hat

Brutus was trying on hats Brenda made up for the kids Thanksgiving craft program on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at the Durand branch. Kids are invited to stop by anytime between 3 and 6 to make a fun hat. Brutus's favorite hat was the turkey, but Brenda told him she was going to wear it for the craft program so he had to share.

Brutus Meets Lucy the Therapy Dog

Brutus was at bedtime story hour Friday night at Durand, and was surprised when Lucy, a therapy dog, showed up. Lucy brought her owner, Marie Holloway, to listen to storyteller Grandma Parks with all of the kids. Lucy was well behaved during story hour but very disappointed when Brutus told her only people cookies are served afterwards. Lucy is planning to come back to the library this winter to listen to children practice reading aloud. Brutus plans to be there too.

Sorting a MeL Delivery

The Owosso Branch received an unusually large MeL (interlibrary loan) delivery this afternoon. Brutus was soon involved. At first, he wanted to play in the pile, but Barb and Margaret weren't very happy about his King (Dog) of the Mountain game. They quickly gave him a job--sniffing out the incorrectly delivered packages. When he was done, they had an entire bag of items which needed to go to other libraries, and the staff were thankful for his help.

Brutus the Ghost

Brutus is getting ready for the library's Halloween programs by trying on his ghost costume. He's especially excited about the "Night with Ghost Hunter Brad Mikulka" at the Owosso branch on Fri., Oct. 23 @ 7 p.m. , and at the Durand Memorial Branch on Fri., Oct. 30 @ 7 p.m. He's hoping Brad will mistake him for a real ghost.

Brutus will also be at the Durand branch for a trick-or-treat bag craft program for kids on Wed., Oct. 21 from 4-7 p.m., and Halloween bedtime story hour on Fri., Oct. 23 @ 7 p.m. Kids who want to come to the craft program should register ahead by calling 288-3743.

The Owosso branch is having a Murder Mystery Party for teens on Sat., Oct. 24 @ 2 p.m. Actors are needed for the program so Brutus has been practicing his acting skill at playing dead. He'll also be at Owosso's costume party for families with preschoolers on Fri., Oct. 30 from 3-4:30.

Where the Wild Things Are

Brutus romped with the wild things at a puppet show based on Maurice Sendak's Where the Wild Things Are yesterday. He joined right in when Max announced "Let the wild rumpus start," and proved that he could also be a wild thing. This was the first of a series of Family Fun Fridays. The next one will be held on October 16 from 2-4 p.m. and will feature a fall craft program.

Brutus helps Caleb with his homework

Because school is underway, Brutus is helping Caleb with his homework on the computer. The library has many sources to help kids with their homework, both in the library and online. If the library doesn't have the book a student needs, library staff will be glad to try and get it from another library through MelCat. Students can also find lots of good information such as Kids InfoBits on the Mel.org databases

Brutus wanted to use the World Book Encyclopedia online to look at all the dog pictures, but Caleb needed to work on math problems. Brutus's favorite problem was: If you have 5 cats and give 5 away, how many cats do you have left?

Library Carnival

Brutus had lots of fun at Saturday's Library Carnival. He was involved with almost everything at some point in the afternoon. The wrecking ball game was his favorite. (If he missed the house with the ball, he could always use his tail). There were lots of prizes to choose from, and some of them looked like lots of fun--the only thing missing was a good bone to chew one. He hoped to win the dog cake, but, alas, it went to one of the kids. He also had to put his nose to the grindstone for part of the afternoon and help Harriet sell tickets. Staff wouldn't let him near the food booth, to his dismay; but he's still not too sure about eating "hot" dogs.

Brutus and the Create a Library Contest Winner

Brutus is looking over the Pony Express Library, the grand prize winner in the Durand Branch's Create a Library contest that was held over the summer. The library was built by Samantha Bukovick and her parents Becky and John. Brutus sniffed all of the detail in Samantha's library which includes over 300 miniature books, but all he could find were horse books, no dog books.

He checked the other library entries in the contest, but couldn't find any dog books there either. He did growl at the library that had a library cat, Dewey. Brutus wanted to bark and chase after the horses in front of Samantha's library, but they were well behaved and refused to run around the library and make noise.

Rally in Lansing

Brutus was a bit in a hurry today. He didn't want to be late for the rally in Lansing being sponsored by the Michigan Library Association. He fears that the state is going to the dogs with the proposed cuts to the Library of Michigan and state aid to public libraries. How can humans be so short-sighted? He wasn't too sure about MeLCat until Barb explained to him that this did not involve cats; it is the statewide interlibrary loan system and catalog which is in jeopardy. Brutus enjoys MeLCat, especially playing in the blue bags and reading dog stories (although he'd like to see the "cat" part changed). Margaret and Steve have calmed him down for today with promises that they will be attending Thursday morning's rally on the Capitol steps at 10 a.m. They hope to see many librarians and library users there in support of Michigan's libraries; everyone is encouraged to write to their state legislators.

Pre-School Winners in the Summer Reading Program

Brutus joined a group of pre-schoolers for a picture yesterday. He loves kids and was thrilled to learn that this group represented the top "readers" (or in their case, probably listeners) in this summer's reading program for their age group. He was so excited with the hugs and pats on the head from the kids, that his tail didn't quit wagging for several hours. He is just as anxious as the children, to see them spend their library dollars at the carnival on September 12th. Brutus Looks for More Books to Read

Brutus is using Bookletters to find more books to read. Margaret is too busy with a desk schedule and helping people in the library this afternoon for him to pick her brain right now, but he has discovered in the Good Reads section of the library's website a past "If You Like . . . Lilian Braun" newsletter. He is not interested in any of the cat mysteries, but thinks that he may try one of Laurien Bernson' s poodle mysteries or Carol Lea Benjamin's books featuring dogs next. He is going to sign up to receive via e-mail some of the newsletters each time they are published.

Hands Around the Library of Michigan

Dog gone it! Brutus can't believe the news that the Library of Michigan may close. He found out that Steve and Margaret had taken the morning off to attend the Hands Around the Library rally in Lansing; he would have gone, too, if dogs had been invited! With less than a year at SDL, he has all ready learned about the great things the Library of Michigan does for many people--lots of books for genealogists, MeL databases, and MeLCat to name just a few. What will he do if there are no more blue bags to climb in and out of or a way to get more dog stories from other libraries? He was glad to hear that over 500 people attended the rally, and Margaret even let him hold on to part of her piece of green ribbon to show his support. He is hoping to help some of the staff write letters to their legislators, after all even dogs know how important libraries are even if they can't vote. He also heard that the librarians will be holding another rally on September 10th, and is hoping that even more people can attend that one.

Brutus Visits Curwood Castle

Brutus had another opportunity to leave the library and visit some of the local sites. Recently he went to Curwood Castle in Owosso to learn more about James Oliver Curwood. He found out that the Castle was used as a writing studio and has been named as a literary landmark by the Friends of Libraries U.S.A. Brutus has seen some of Curwood's books in the library and was excited to visit the place where Curwood worked and see the Shiawassee River. (Staff was grateful to learn that Brutus wasn't interested in swimming in the river). And you should have seen his tail wag when found out that several of these books (Kazan and Baree) were about dogs!

Library Board Picnic

Brutus was all ready to go to the Library Board picnic on Wednesday evening; he was drooling over the good food which was going to be there--especially the desserts (apple pie, cookies, chocolate cake, and more). Then he heard that the main course was to to be hot dogs and he decided to stay in Owosso. He was worried that after he messed up Margaret's desk a week ago, that he might become the "hot" dog. No one could convince him that hot dogs were not made from real dogs. Everyone else had a good time.

Mr. H's Corner

This afternoon was also exciting for Brutus. The family of Steve Hanzolvic made a donation to the library in his memory. Mr. H. was a teacher and the money is being used to purchase resources for parents and teachers which will housed in the Children's Department. There was even a cake, but Brutus wasn't allowed to eat it himself--humans got first chance at it. Brutus never had the chance to meet Mr. H, but he thinks that he must have been a great teacher to be honored this way. Did he ever use books about dogs in his classroom?

Brutus Goes to Storyhour

Brutus misses out on ALA

Brutus was a bad dog today. He missed Steve and Margaret for a few days, and just found out that they had gone to a conference in Chicago without him! He messed up Margaret's desk in revenge and started to chew up her program book. Margaret will be spending part of the afternoon cleaning up the mess. Brutus was also unhappy that he missed meeting Oscar the Robot in Emery-Pratt's booth and that he will have to share his space with the new fish seen in the photo. His only consolation is that neither of them brought home any cats. He is being promised that if he behaves himself until next year, he might be able to visit Washington, DC. He thinks that this may be too much to expect from a dog who likes to have fun.

Brutus attended the Joel Tacey comedy and juggling show in the pavilion behind the Durand Memorial Branch. He was happy to meet another dog, Major, at the show since he usually doesn't get to see other dogs in the library.

Brutus helped Joel set up for the show but they stopped long enough to have their pictures taken with some kids. Joel was being funny and stuck bunny ears behind Brutus. Brutus didn't mind since they weren't cat ears.

The show was so exciting that Brutus volunteered to help Joel, but he didn't know he was going to be juggled. Brutus thought it was fun but he was dizzy for a while. The crowd of 123 humans, 2 dogs, and one rabbit all enjoyed Joel's performance. The next program wil be a make and take craft program on July 22 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Birds of Prey Program

Brutus joined 48 people for a program by the Howell Nature Center on the Birds of Prey this afternoon. He was sad to learn that the falcon, hawk, and owls visiting the Children's Department hunt small rodents and smaller birds, but not nature's greatest nuisance--cats.

Brutus Marches to the Beat of a Different Drummer

Brutus was involved in a visit from Drummunity this afternoon. He joined about 75 kids and their parents for a chance to march to the beat of various items used as drums. (He found it difficult to keep all four feet in time with the beat). Everyone had a great time. Brutus is also looking forward to next week's program being done by the Howell Nature Center on Tuesday, July 7th at 1 p.m. Rumor has it that live birds are involved. Can he run fast enough to catch one?

Brutus and the Bubble Man

Brutus met the Bubble Man this afternoon in Owosso's Children's Department. He thought that the bubbles were very neat (and would have chased some of them if the staff had allowed it), but the heat began to get to him. The Bubble Man needed one of the fans turned off and there were about 60 people at the program. At first he thought that he might take a swim in the vat of bubble solution, but Annie told him that it wasn't just plain water--there was a lot of soap in it! Brutus settled for a nice cold drink from the water fountain instead. Brutus is enjoying the summer reading program so far and hopes to meet even more kids at story hours and Drummunity on July 2nd at 1 p.m.

Sorting Books for the Booksale

Brutus decided to help Margaret sort books this morning. The only problem was where to start. There are lots of books for tomorrow's sale which will be held on the library's front lawn (502 W. This year's display was entitled "Held in the Heartland" and featured information and artifacts related to World War II German POW's who were held in the midwestern U.S. Brutus didn't know much about World War II so he found the treatment of the enemy very interesting. Many of men, some of whom were housed just west of Owosso, worked on area farms or in local factories. Chicaro had also compiled a notebook of reminisces and newspaper articles related to Owosso's camp. Brutus learned alot about both the POWs and Owosso's history in a short period of time. For anyone who missed the exhibit, the accompaning booklet will be made available at the library in a few weeks as well as the notebook.

Brutus Plants flowers for Community Pride Week

Brutus helped Harriet plant the new flower bed around the Owosso Branch's sign. This was the final step in the library's part of Owosso's Community Pride Week. He was disappointed that there were no dogwood trees included, but was excited to hear about blanket flowers, that is until he was told that he couldn't lay in them. He was allowed to do some digging, but was also told he couldn't dig up any plants. (So many rules for such a small dog to remember!) Everyone on the staff thinks that the new bed is a great addition to the library's landscaping and hopes that the community does too. Brutus Checks out the Large Print Collection

Brutus (and his litter mates) originally belonged to a large print publisher, and this week Brutus decided to browse through the large print books. As usual he was looking for books about dogs, but there weren't enough to satisfy him. He did find one with the word bladebone in the title and asked if that meant that he could chew on it. The librarian quickly thanked him for asking but explained that chewing on books was not allowed and could result in having to pay for a replacement copy. BTW, a bladebone is a shoulder blade and anyone who wants to know more (including Brutus) may want to check out the mystery by Martha Grimes, The Five Bells and Bladebone.

Brutus Helps with Community Pride Week

Brutus is enjoying some of the nice spring weather by helping Steve and Joe spruce up the library's front yard as part of Owosso's Community Pride Week celebration. He had a lot of fun running from landscaping block to landscaping block as they tried to remove the sod around the library's sign. Once the ground has been prepared, flowers will be planted. Be looking for Brutus to check out the new plants when they're in!

Grant Brown speaks at Durand Union Statiosn

Brutus enjoyed a visit to Durand Union Station last night. This is the first time, staff has allowed him to leave the library, but they found that he had to be kept on a very short leash. Grant Brown was giving a presentation on his book, Ninety Years Crossing Lake Michigan, and Brutus wanted to help. As you can see, he got involved in the autographing of the books, and running the slide show. (Margaret was happy that this kept him out of the refreshments). About fifty people (humans, not counting dogs) attended an excellent program on the Ann Arbor Railroad car ferries. Brutus hopes that he is allowed to leave the library and visit some more places in the community this summer.

Flooding in Owosso

Brutus and the library staff had a little more excitement than anyone really wanted this morning. Last night's rain caused some minor flooding in Owosso's Children's Department, and there was no access to water for either patrons or staff. Brutus had a good time, however, riding around on the wet-vac as the custodian tried to clean up the mess. He also enjoyed some extra attention from the staff as they tried to keep him (and everything else) dry. Everyone is hoping that the water will recede in time to open on Wednesday.

Writing Contest Awards

Last night Brutus attended the awards program for the Friends of the Library 3rd Grade Writing Contest at the Durand branch. Here he is shown with the students who received awards. Honorable Mention went to Shane Gardner, Kyle Godley, Joel Landeros, and Jacob Pickel. Winning Entry prizes were awarded to Julia Podsiadlik, Zackary Canfield, and Jared McGinnis.

Brutus was surprised to find out this is the 42nd year for the writing contest, and he figured out that it's six years old in dog years. He was disappointed there were not any stories about dogs but there was one story about cats, "The Cat Alphabet Book". He promised to not chew that book as long as he got a bite of one of the cookies that were served afterwards.

Edible Book Contest

Brutus was caught "red-pawed" sniffing around the Edible Book entries yesterday. Fortunately, he was caught before he had a chance to taste test any of the submissions. He had a difficult time deciding which were the best entries, especially in the Children's Book category. He did, however, finally decide that if he wanted to remain as the library's mascot he should vote for Steve's Egg and I creation as well as Margaret's version of the Thorn Birds. At least, that's what he told us; we'll never really know since he didn't leave any paw prints on his ballot.

He stayed around to hear Patty Pinner speak, and really enjoyed her talk. He hopes that she can come back again, especially if it means more food in the library. He was disappointed, however, when he had to let all the humans eat the cobblers and nothing was left for him.

Brutus @ the Spring Craft Program

Brutus had a fun time at the egg craft program during spring break. He helped the kids make all sorts of egg creatures including a duck, an alien, and even Edward the vampire from the Twilight books. Then he wanted to eat the eggs, but changed his mind when he saw the Brutus egg that Heather made for him. Brutus can't wait for more crafts during the children's summer reading program, "Great Creative @ the Library" which starts in June.

Spring Break Puppet Shows

Brutus had to join in on the fun and excitement of the Spring 2009 Puppet Shows. This week's show, Three Little Fish and the Big Bad Shark, is being performed through Thursday at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.. Being a dog, Brutus just watched the fish; he didn't try to eat them like a cat might. While the puppet show was fun, he thought the treat (he could eat) at the end was the best part. He also enjoyed meeting some of the kids who attended.

Brutus Looks for Edible Book ideas

Brutus found out there will be an Edible Book Contest at the library in a couple of weeks. He was busy this morning sniffing out a title for his entry; his only request was that it be about a dog. Margaret had lots of ideas. Marley and Me could be used in the Adult Non-Fiction category or any of the Clifford or Carl books as a Children's Title. There were also lots of Adult fiction books to choose from : Kazan or Baree by Curwood, Jack London's Call of the Wild or White Fang, or any of Berenson's poodle mysteries. At first Brutus thought that he was supposed to eat the books, but this misconception was quickly corrected before he could do any damage; instead, he needs to create something which can be eaten based on a book. Brutus has until April 13 to make his selection and turn in his entry blank. Judging and the awards program will take place on April 16th.

Bedtime Story Hour

On Friday night Brutus attended the bedtime story hour at the Durand Memorial Branch where he got to meet lots of kids and other stuffed animals. They all enjoyed the stories told by Grandma Parks. After story hour they had milk and cookies. Brutus had trouble dunking his cookies in the milk with his paws, but he still had fun. He'll be back for the next bedtime story hour April 17 @ 7 p.m.

Nancy's Birthday

Brutus was very upset this morning when he learned that he had missed the celebration for Nancy's birthday last night. He has been whining in his box all morning. (To think that he missed the chance to have a piece of cake which would have turned his teeth black!) How old did they say she is? She's only 39!

Brutus Meets a new staff member

Brutus recently met the newest member of the Owosso Branch's staff. He had his picture taken with Andrew at the end of his first day working as a page, and Brutus had the opportunity to ride around on the re-shelving cart as Andrew learned how to put books away. It was much more difficult than Brutus thought--he needed to know his numbers (including fractions) as well as the alphabet! Andrew found the concepts much easier, so Brutus thinks he'll let him keep the job--plus, Brutus had a much harder time reaching some of the shelves (but being pushed around on the cart was fun).

Brutus at the Book Sale

Brutus recently helped Durand Branch pages Maggie and Heather set up for the Friends of the Library book sale. He found many good books to buy, including "Harry the Dirty Dog" and "Good Dog, Carl". He could not find "Marley and Me", but he's hoping it will be available in the next sale which will be held during Durand Railroad Days May 15 & 16.

Brutus Plays Rock Band

As part of the library's Teen Tech Week celebration, Brutus tried his paws at rock stardom, playing the drums and singing in Rock Band. He thinks he did better than any of the teens, but there is some debate on that score (especially the singing). He would like to see more kids join him every Wednesday after school for Wii Wednesdays!

Brutus Attends Story Hour

Brutus visited the Preschool Story Hour yesterday. He enjoyed meeting the kids (and they liked him) as well as hearing several stories about animals. He also liked the dragon on their rug--it was almost as good as a dog. However, the highlight of the program, for him, was the craft project. There's not much better than having your own dog! Brutus and the children made Dalmations to take home. He also hopes to have a chance to go to more story hours in the future.

Brutus Reads the Paper

Brutus was thrilled to see the front page news article about the library's preschool story hour. He has even asked if he can attend next week's program at 10:30 Tuesday morning. He was told that the stories will be about animals, and he hopes that Annie includes books about dogs. He also thinks that it will fun to meet the children.

Brutus Learns about the Internet

Today Brutus joined an Internet for Seniors class. The students loved meeting Brutus, and while he doesn't consider himself to be a senior, Brutus enjoyed both the students and the class. His favorite part was watching them look at his blog. (He thought he looked charming). The most difficult part for Brutus was learning to use the mouse--he realized why cats have sharp claws; it kept slipping out of his grasp. Soon he'll be using the Internet to find dog treats, more books about dogs, and maybe even a MySpace or Facebook page.

Brutus and Valentine's Day

Brutus attended the Valentine's craft program at the Durand Memorial Branch, but he was caught red pawed, or red handed, in the bag of candy. Since it was chocolate, he couldn't have any, but the kids who came to the program took some home.

Later Brutus watched his new friend Aubrey make a paper heart envelope to hold candy.
He was disappointed the envelope wouldn't hold doggie treats. He invited Aubrey to come back in the spring for another fun craft program.

Brutus Tours the Children's Department

Brutus was given a tour of the Children's Department in Owosso this afternoon by Natalie, our senior page. She helped him find books on training dogs. Brutus was impressed by her knowledge of the books which were available and how to find them. Someday he hopes to be able to help some of pages shelve books or read their shelves, but he still has a lot to learn about libraries.

Brutus Applies for a Library Card

Dogs aren't usually issued library cards, but after much discussion it was decided than an exception could be made for Brutus as the library mascot. As he filled out the forms and presented his ID (a dog license), a decision also had to be made as to whether or not he was eligible for an adult or a children's card. The final decision--since he was born during the Chinese Year of the Dog (2006) and the web calculators for changing dog years into human years make him over 14, he was given an adult card. Brutus hopes to find lots of dog books and stories about dogs to read in the next month. Margaret tried to introduce him to Lilian Braun's Cat Who series, but he prefers Laurien Berenson's Doggie Day Care and her other mysteries featuring poodles. The librarians fear that cats may never make Brutus' reading list.
